I found this video on YouTube today. It’s a 6.3 minute video talking about the critical importance of the student’s use of the internet. Unfortunately 90% of the citizens of the county can’t watch it, due to lack of high-speed internet.
Frankly, I don’t know what the issues are -- economics, politics, priorities? I know that the Board of Supervisors are working on it, but it’s time to make broadband a reality. I don’t care if the taxes have to be raised to pay for it or if we have to abandon the inept Verizon and Comcast companies (who reportedly have the wiring in place, but not the funds to turn it on -- whatever that means) to pursue it with another provider. It simply needs to happen.
Internet has become a much needed household resource and no longer are content writers designing web programs with the least-common-dialup-users in mind. Business, education, bill paying, account maintenances, communications and more hinge on this service. Lack of this utility’s availability is retarding not just the quality of life, but the ability to advance and be competitive academically and economically. It’s been one of the most talked about topics on our blog.
